Gainsborough Old Hall is one of the finest medieval manor houses in England.

The hall was built for the powerful and influential knight Sir Thomas Burgh. Sir Thomas, a confidant of Richard III, hosted the king in 1483 as he journeyed from York to London.

In 1541, the huge kitchen was busy with preparations for more royal guests. King Henry VIII and his fifth wife, the ill-fated Catherine Howard, visited during their journey from London to York.  She was beheaded the next year, having been found guilty of adulterous treason.

By curious coincidence, 12 years earlier, Gainsborough Old Hall had been the marital home of Katherine Parr - destined to become Henry' s sixth and last wife. Katherine had married Sir Edward Burgh, third son of the third Lord Burgh, who died in 1533.
