Postcards from Lincolnshire - then and now

Visitors have been welcome at Lincoln Castle, Lincolnshire's coast and the Edwardian resort of Woodhall Spa for over 100 years.

Lincoln Castle has been a tourist attraction since the late 19th century. After the Victorian prison closed, the grounds were opened to the public. Visitors were charged 2d a head which was collected by Frederick Quipp, the gate-keeper.

The space and setting of the castle was perfect for events and gatherings such as the Lincolnshire Automobile Association rally in 1902. A gleaming display of forty cars and motorcycles were parked in the castle grounds while their owners were treated to a tour of the castle. Today medieval tournaments, living history re-enactments and concerts attract visitors in their thousands.
