'Lights, camera, action!' - Lincolnshire's starring role

If Lincoln Castle's grim prison cells, magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, and the county's stunning stately houses seem familiar - you've probably seen them on screen.

Hollywood film directors and TV producers have been coming to locations around the county for years to film drama - from the romantic period classics of Jane Austen to contemporary thrillers. When Mr Bates (actor Brendon Coyle), valet to the Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey, was sentenced to life imprisonment for his first wife's murder, Lincoln Castle stood in for York Castle prison. Film crews returned in 2014 to record scenes for the hit BBC series Call the Midwife. This time the prison doubled as Holloway women's gaol, in a storyline involving the midwives delivering a prisoner's baby.
